Laser Acceleration of Ions in Plasma

Acceleration of ions using femtosecond intense laser pulses in gaseous plasma targets has certain advantages over solid targets.  Recent experiments using CO2 lasers and Ti:Sapphire laser in near critical density plasma are presented.  Acceleration mechanisms and propects for improved acceleration performance will be discussed.
