【Colloquium】Vlasov Simulations of Relativistic Laser-Plasma Interactions

Vlasov simulations of plasmas are suitable for certain problems requiring low noise and high resolution of the high-momentum tail of the particle distribution function. Low-dimensional Vlasov simulations can be used to study the physics of selected problems. We present 1+1 (space+momentum space)-dimensional relativistic Vlasov simulations of the interaction between large-amplitude non-linear electron holes and electromagnetic waves, as well as of parametric instabilities where the laser excites Langmuir waves (Raman scattering) and ion acoustic waves (Brillouin scattering). In particular we discuss the interaction when the critical density is above, at, and below quarter-critical of the peak electron density in a plasma slab. We also comment on the conditions for convective versus absolute three-wave parametric instabilities in plasmas.
